The items in this collection primarily document the work of Heinrich Stahl as the chairman of the Berlin Jewish Community. Other topics encountered in this collection include Jewish relief organizations, and Stahl's work in the insurance industry
Material pertaining to Heinrich Stahl's role as head of the Jewish Community of Berlin will be found in several places in the collection. The biographies located in Series I focus on this portion of Stahl's life. His involvement with Jewish organizations will be seen through the address he gave at the Alte Synagoge in Berlin and the correspondence with community members found in Series II
This collection also contains extensive material on the work of Jewish relief organizations during Nazi Germany, mainly in the form of photo albums located in Series III. These albums contain photographs of several children's homes and institutions as well as of the Jüdische Winterhilfe offices on Rosenstrasse in Berlin. In addition, this series also holds albums of old-age homes, including the Heinrich Stahl-Heim. A few documents pertaining to the Heinrich Stahl-Heim is also available in Series I: Personal
Some documentation of Heinrich Stahl's position as an insurance executive can also be found in this collection. Most of this among his business correspondence, located in Series II; brief mention of this role will also be found among the biographical clippings in Series I
Heinrich Stahl was born in Berlin-Rudow on April 13, 1868. For much of his life, he worked an insurance executive, including with the Viktoria Versicherungsgesellschaft in Berlin, and was also involved in the Jewish communal affairs. In 1933 he was elected chairman of the Berlin Jewish Community. He was very involved in assisting Berlin Jews in leaving Germany, and in this capacity worked with many organizations, including the Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland. On June 11, 1942 Heinrich Stahl was deported from Berlin with his wife Jenny. He died in Theresienstadt in November 1942 of a lung infection at the age of 75
